What is Fuel Subsidy? See its effects

admin

Published

on

By

Fuel Subsidy: Imagine you’re going to a store to buy a product, let’s say bread. Normally, the price of that bread is ₦50. However, the government decides to help you out by giving the store some money so that they can sell the chocolate bar to you for only ₦30. This is called a subsidy.

Now, the same concept applies to fuel. The government gives money to fuel producers or importers so that they can sell fuel to you at a lower price. This is done to make sure that fuel is affordable for everyone because we need fuel for things like driving cars, running generators, and other activities.

What is Fuel Subsidy Removal?

Fuel subsidy removal means that the government decides to stop giving money to fuel producers or importers to reduce the cost of fuel. When this happens, the price you pay for fuel may increase because the government is no longer helping to lower the price.

But why would the government do this? Well, there are a few reasons. First, the government spends a lot of money on fuel subsidies. By removing fuel subsidies, the government can use that money for these important areas instead.

You can now use your ID card as an ATM card. Check now

Second, if the government stops subsidizing fuel, it can encourage the establishment of more fuel refineries within the country. This means that Nigeria won’t have to depend so much on importing fuel from other countries. Having our own refineries can boost our economy and create more jobs for Nigerians.

So, while the removal of fuel subsidies may lead to an increase in fuel prices in the short term, it can benefit the economy in the long run by freeing up money for other sectors, promoting domestic fuel production, and creating job opportunities for Nigerians.

So, let’s go into the Advantages and Disadvantages of Fuel subsidy removal

Advantages of Fuel Subsidy Removal:

  1. Economic Resource Allocation: One of the main advantages of fuel subsidy removal is that it frees up resources for other sectors of the economy. Governments often allocate a significant portion of their budget to fuel subsidies. This reallocation can lead to improved public services and overall economic growth.
  2. Enhanced Energy Independence: Fuel subsidy removal can stimulate the establishment of domestic refineries, reducing the country’s dependence on imported fuel. This increased domestic production of petroleum products enhances energy security and reduces the need for foreign exchange expenditures. It strengthens the nation’s energy independence, reducing vulnerability to international fuel price fluctuations and geopolitical risks.
  3. Economic Boost through Refinery Development: With the removal of fuel subsidies, there is a greater incentive for the establishment and growth of domestic refineries. Increased refining capacity not only reduces import reliance but also fosters the growth of related industries, such as petrochemicals and manufacturing. This boost in economic activity leads to job creation, increased investments, and a more diversified and resilient economy.
  4. Efficient Energy Use: Fuel subsidies can often lead to inefficient energy consumption and overreliance on fossil fuels. Consumers are encouraged to be more conscious of their energy usage and explore alternative energy sources. This shift towards more sustainable and efficient energy practices contributes to environmental preservation and addresses climate change concerns.
  5. Fiscal Responsibility: Fuel subsidies can strain government budgets, leading to budget deficits and unsustainable financial practices. The removal of subsidies promotes fiscal responsibility by reducing the burden on public finances. Governments can redirect these savings towards priority areas, such as infrastructure development, social welfare programs, and investment in renewable energy sources.

Disadvantages of Fuel Subsidy Removal:

  1. Increased Fuel Prices: One of the primary disadvantages of fuel subsidy removal is that it often leads to an immediate increase in fuel prices. This can cause a burden on individuals and businesses, especially those who heavily rely on fuel for transportation or power generation.
  2. Inflationary Pressure: The rise in fuel prices resulting from subsidy removal can have broader economic implications. Higher fuel costs can lead to increased production costs for businesses, which may be passed on to consumers in the form of higher prices for goods and services. This can contribute to inflationary pressures within the economy, reducing the purchasing power of individuals and potentially impacting overall economic stability.
  3. Impact on Low-Income Groups: Fuel subsidy removal can disproportionately affect low-income groups who spend a significant portion of their income on fuel. For these individuals and families, the increase in fuel prices can lead to higher transportation costs, affecting their daily commute, access to essential services, and overall living expenses. This can exacerbate income inequality and pose challenges for vulnerable populations.
  4. Social Unrest: The removal of fuel subsidies has the potential to trigger social unrest and public dissatisfaction, particularly if the increase in fuel prices is perceived as unfair or burdensome. Protests and demonstrations may arise as a result of the public’s frustration with the sudden rise in living costs.
  5. Economic Impact on Industries: Industries that heavily rely on fuel as a key input, such as transportation, logistics, and agriculture, may experience increased operational costs as a result of fuel subsidy removal. This can have a negative impact on their profitability and competitiveness, potentially leading to job losses, reduced productivity, and economic strain in these sectors.

My Thoughts

Removal of fuel subsidy in itself is not bad, so far it is utilized in other areas of the economy that would be evidently beneficial to everyone. But the fear is, where the money goes after it is removed? Do we languish in the fear of the unknown and thick darkness about the way forward as the price of things keeps increasing?

digital assets can now be used for school fee payments in Nigeria, check to see how

Nigerians predominately rely on fuel for basically everything, how will businesses thrive when prices skyrocket with nothing to back it up or regulate the aftermath of the fuel subsidy removal?

We can just hope that all will be well.

eNaira To Be Used For School Fees And Salary Payments

enaira wallet

Significant improvements are taking place in Nigeria, but adoption is slow. Did you know that Nigerians can now use their ATM card as IDs? I guess you didn’t know before now. See more about that here.

I have never used the enaira, but folks that have used it said it is very fast and simple and free. If there are so many positive reviews on it, I really see no reason why there has been low adoption of the technology. Maybe because it does not significantly add more value to the existing naira crash?

Why is the adoption of eNaira slow?

Today, let’s delve into the topic of eNaira adoption and explore why it’s been a bit sluggish so far. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has shed some light on this, and one of the reasons they’ve pointed out is the phased approach adopted by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). In the initial phase, access to eNaira wallets was limited to individuals with bank accounts, while non-bank account holders gained access later on.

However, this phased approach wouldn’t have been as much of a problem if the digital currency had worked as promised during its launch. Unfortunately, in May 2022, when the first upgrade was announced, it was revealed that the eNaira needed significant rework due to inconsistencies at its initial launch. Chimezie Chuta, Founder of the Nigerian Blockchain User Group and a consultant on the digital currency project, shared this insight.

Another consultant on the project, Adedeji Owonibi, Founder of Convexity, also mentioned that the launch of the eNaira was rushed. These initial hiccups may have impacted its adoption.

Now, let’s shift our focus to the efforts made by the CBN to increase the adoption of the the digital currency. They have been actively working on enhancing its appeal and usability. From integrating the eNaira with USSD technology to developing a user-friendly app, the CBN has been striving to make it easier for people to use and engage with the eNaira. They even went the extra mile by creating promotional videos during times of cash crunch to generate interest.

But…

Despite these efforts, we’re yet to see significant results in terms of adoption. Adedeji Owonibi, in the article I mentioned earlier, shares some valuable points regarding the eNaira’s slow uptake despite the recent CBN initiatives. One key aspect he highlights is the CBN’s delay in leveraging private partnerships early on. It was only almost a year after the eNaira launch that the CBN announced opportunities for fintechs to explore investment in the digital currency. While Yusuf Jelil, Principal Manager and Business Lead for the digital currency project, expressed the CBN’s interest in collaboration, no specific investment opportunities have been announced thus far.

What’s the next step?

To further promote the use of eNaira, the CBN revealed plans to enable the payment of government university fees and salaries using the digital currency. In fact, they took their eNaira campaign to Jos and encouraged staff and students to embrace the eNaira wallet. According to Esther Tinat, the CBN Jos Branch Controller, their aim is to capture the attention of students and kickstart the payment of school fees through the eNaira. She also highlighted that the eNaira would be utilized for paying salaries in select government agencies in the future, emphasizing its cost-effectiveness.

Now, the big question arises: Will these measures increase eNaira adoption? It’s a tough one to answer, my friends. You see, historically, government policies haven’t always resonated well with Nigerians, especially when they’re enforced. So, it’s still too early to determine whether eNaira adoption will continue to stall or gradually improve.

The IMF acknowledges that the eNaira project is still a work in progress, at an early stage. They also emphasize that breaking the initial low adoption equilibrium requires a mix of clever strategies and a bit of luck.

Time will be the ultimate judge of whether the strategy of using eNaira for school fees and salaries will lead to improved adoption or if Nigerians will continue to overlook this digital currency. Let’s stay tuned and see how things unfold!

And yes, The National blockchain policy has been approved by the Nigeria Government, did you know about that too? Check it here
